About the pronciation of "the"?

I have never thought about it, so, for me, it is not a conscious rule following. However, if observing it is tiresome, I would advise opting for the latter pronounciation. The long vowel sound, as in "eat", sounds more unusual if always adopted, whereas the schwa, as in "a" bout, does not sound that odd when applied generally.
