Do I have to add water to chuck roast in a crock pot?

I seasoned the meat and have put it in the crockpot, now do I have to add water? I have always been taught to cover the meat with water, but I am not wanting a stew. I cooked a pork roast last week and did not add water and there was plenty of juices by the end of cooking time. Thanks!!
