In American sports, isn't the title of "world champion" misleading?

College athletics have it right by saying "national champions". Since foreign countries are now playing sports American style (basketball, baseball, football) wouldn't the addition of other countries into the leagues add a more pionate feel to our games, just like soccer, to properly earn the title world champs?
