You should have a cleanout somewhere in your yard where the main sewer drain comes out of your house. Find the cleanout, remove the threaded cap, and then run the snake in both directions, towards the house, and then towards the street. When you remove the cap, if there is a backup of water in the pipe, then you only need to run the snake towards the street (away from the house). Hope this helps.
